Self Reflection

Thank you for completing the self-assessment reflection.

Question Answer
WHAT? Reflect on your self-assessment. Make initial observations. The self-assessment demonstrated a high level of compliance and quality across most areas of promoting healthy eating and physical activity. I am doing well in modelling healthy behaviours, implementing routines, and providing children with experiences that encourage active lifestyles and balanced nutrition. However, a priority area for improvement is providing families with information and guidance on encouraging physical activity and healthy eating at home. I would like to focus on developing effective strategies for engaging families in these areas.
SO WHAT? Ask deeper questions to better understand the results. While I actively encourage healthy eating and physical activity with children through modelling, routines, and experiences, I feel uncomfortable having face-to-face discussions with families about nutrition and physical activity unless these are initiated or requested by families, as I feel educator-initiated conversations around these concerns could be deemed as judgemental. Supplying information through pamphlets and documenting healthy experiences in the service allows me to promote positive behaviours in a non-judgemental way. I am considering what strategies could support more direct but non-confrontational communication with families regarding the health and nutrition of their children. Understanding why some practices are easier to implement (via modelling) than others (initiating family discussions) highlights a need for targeted professional support from the broader service provider and further professional development and supporting resources.
WHAT NEXT? Consider what improvements to make and take action. To address this area for improvement, I plan to explore non-confrontational communication strategies with families, such as sharing brief tips during drop-off/pick-up, providing visually engaging resources (pamphlets, posters, or digital updates), and inviting families to participate in service-based healthy eating or active lifestyle events. I will continue to model healthy behaviours with children and maintain documentation that showcases these practices. To build confidence and professional skills, I aim to research and access workshops, webinars, or online resources focused on family engagement and health promotion. Collaborating with my coordinator will also help me share ideas, gather feedback, and develop practical approaches for discussing nutrition and physical activity with families in a supportive, respectful manner. Ultimately, my goal is to confidently engage families in promoting healthy lifestyles while maintaining a positive, non-judgemental, and supportive approach that encourages active participation and lasting habits.
